Essential Apps for China Travel
What Americans Actually Need (2026)
China runs on apps that don't exist in America, and American apps don't work in China. This isn't a minor inconvenience — without the right apps, you can't pay for food, hail a taxi, or find your hotel. Here are the 15 apps you actually need, ranked by importance, with step-by-step setup instructions. Download everything before you board the plane.
✦ At a Glance — 15 Apps for China
| App | Category | Setup Before Departure? |
| Alipay | Payments | Recommended |
| WeChat | Messaging/Pay | Recommended |
| VPN | Connectivity | Required |
| Amap / Baidu Maps | Navigation | Recommended |
| DiDi | Transport | Recommended |
| Google Translate | Language | Download offline pack |
| Trip.com | Booking | Optional |
| eSIM app (Airalo) | Connectivity | Set up before — see guide |
✦ The Non-Negotiable 5 — Download Before Boarding
- Alipay — Your wallet. Link your US card. Pay for everything.
- WeChat — Messaging + payments + restaurant ordering + mini-programs. China's "super app."
- A VPN app — Access Google, WhatsApp, Instagram. Cannot be downloaded inside China.
- Amap or Baidu Maps — Google Maps is broken in China. These actually work.
- DiDi — China's Uber. Safe, metered, English interface.
Payment Apps
Pay for Everything
China is effectively cashless. Credit cards are accepted almost nowhere. These two apps replace your wallet entirely.
💰
Alipay (支付宝)
Payments · Transit · Mini-programs
Must-Have
This is your #1 most important app. Alipay is accepted at 99% of shops, restaurants, street vendors, metro stations, and taxis in China. You scan QR codes to pay — it's faster than cash or card. As of 2026, Alipay fully supports US credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover). No Chinese bank account needed. Alipay also has built-in mini-programs for metro tickets, bike sharing, attraction booking, and food delivery.
Setup (10 min): Download Alipay → Choose international version → Register with your US phone number → Verify identity with passport photo → Link your US credit card → Done. Transactions over ¥200 (~$28) may incur a ~3% service fee. Keep transactions under ¥200 when possible, or ask vendors to split the payment.
💬
WeChat Pay (微信支付)
Payments · Messaging · Social · Everything
Must-Have
WeChat is China's "super app" — messaging, social media, payments, restaurant ordering, ride-hailing, and thousands of mini-programs all in one. WeChat Pay is your backup payment method for the rare places that only accept WeChat (some small vendors, certain restaurants). You'll also need WeChat to scan QR codes for restaurant menus — many Chinese restaurants have replaced paper menus with WeChat-based ordering.
Setup (15 min): Download WeChat → Register with US phone number → Important: You may need an existing WeChat user to "verify" your new account. Do this weeks before your trip — ask a friend who uses WeChat, or post in China travel Facebook groups. → Link your US credit card under Me → Wallet → Bank Cards.
Connectivity
Get Online — Behind the Firewall
⚠ Blocked in China Without a VPN
Google (Search, Maps, Gmail, Drive, YouTube) · WhatsApp · Instagram · Facebook · Twitter/X · Snapchat · Most Western news sites · ChatGPT. If you want access to ANY of these, you need a VPN or international eSIM.
🔒
VPN App
Internet Access · Privacy
Must-Have
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) tunnels your internet traffic through servers outside China, bypassing the Great Firewall. You cannot download most VPN apps once inside China — install and test before departure. Popular options: ExpressVPN (most reliable in China), Astrill (fast), NordVPN (good value). Expect occasional slowdowns — no VPN works 100% of the time in China.
Setup: Subscribe and download your VPN app at home → Install on phone AND laptop → Connect to a server and test → Download the app's manual configuration files (in case the app is blocked) → Connect before landing in China.
📡
eSIM (Airalo / Holafly)
Data · Connectivity
Must-Have
You need mobile data the moment you land — for maps, payments, translation, and communication. An eSIM is the easiest option: activate before landing, connected instantly when the plane doors open. Some eSIM providers (Airalo, Holafly) route traffic through servers outside China, which means blocked apps may work without a VPN. Check your provider's policy.
Setup: Buy an eSIM plan (10GB for ~$15–25) → Install via QR code → Activate before departure → Arrives as a "secondary line" on your phone → Disable your US data to avoid roaming charges.
Navigation
Find Your Way — Google Maps Won't Help
🗺️
Amap / Gaode Maps (高德地图)
Navigation · Transit · Walking
Must-Have
Google Maps does not work properly in China. GPS coordinates are intentionally shifted, data is outdated, and transit info is missing. Amap (also called Gaode Maps) is China's most accurate navigation app — used by 700+ million people. It gives subway exit numbers, bus routes, walking directions, real-time traffic, and even indoor mall navigation. English interface available for major cities.
Alternative: Baidu Maps is equally accurate. Apple Maps also works reasonably well in China (it uses local data). Use whichever has the best English support for your device.
Transportation
Get Around — Taxis, Trains, Flights
🚗
DiDi (滴滴出行)
Ride-Hailing · Taxis
Must-Have
DiDi is China's Uber — shows the price before you ride, prevents overcharging, and provides a digital receipt. English interface available. Works in all major cities. Pay through Alipay or WeChat Pay. Pro tip: DiDi also runs as a mini-program inside Alipay, so you can use it without downloading a separate app.
Tip: Enter your destination in Chinese characters (copy from Amap) for best results. Drivers don't speak English — the app handles all communication. If the driver calls you, let it ring and they'll figure it out, or use the in-app translation feature.
🚄
Trip.com (携程)
Trains · Flights · Hotels · Attractions
Recommended
The easiest English-language platform for booking Chinese high-speed trains, domestic flights, hotels, and attraction tickets. The official railway app (12306) is all-Chinese and requires a Chinese bank account — Trip.com handles passport verification and accepts international credit cards. Book everything before departure for peace of mind.
Tip: ChinaWithEase books all trains, flights, and attractions for clients — but if you're planning independently, Trip.com is your best bet.
Translation
Break the Language Barrier
🌐
Google Translate
Translation · Camera · Voice
Recommended
Download the Chinese offline language pack before departure. This lets you translate text, voice, and camera input without internet. Point your camera at a Chinese menu, sign, or document and see instant English translation. Works offline after downloading the pack. Note: only works with mobile data via eSIM in China — does not work on WiFi without VPN.
Alternative: Baidu Translate works without VPN and supports voice, text, and camera. Pleco is the gold-standard Chinese-English dictionary app — great for looking up individual characters.
📖
Pleco
Chinese Dictionary · Character Recognition
Recommended
The best Chinese-English dictionary app available. Draw Chinese characters with your finger, take photos of text, or type pinyin to get definitions. The optical character recognition (OCR) add-on is incredibly useful for reading restaurant menus, street signs, and labels. Works entirely offline.
Tip: Get the free OCR add-on for instant camera translation. Between Google Translate (for sentences) and Pleco (for individual words), you can decode almost any Chinese text.
Food & Lifestyle
Eat, Review, Discover
🍜
Dianping (大众点评)
Restaurant Reviews · Food Discovery
Nice-to-Have
China's Yelp — the best way to find authentic local restaurants. Ratings, photos, menus, and sometimes discount coupons. Some foreign users voluntarily translate menus in reviews. Primarily in Chinese, but the photo reviews are universally understandable. If you see a restaurant with 4.5+ stars and 1,000+ reviews on Dianping, it's going to be good.
Tip: Use Alipay's built-in floating translator when browsing Dianping — it translates Chinese text in real-time.
🛒
Meituan (美团)
Food Delivery · Deals · Tickets
Nice-to-Have
Uber Eats meets Groupon. Order food delivery to your hotel, find local discounts, and buy attraction tickets at lower prices than box offices. Great for lazy evenings when you don't want to leave the hotel. Primarily in Chinese — use with translation app or ask your guide to help set up a favorite order.
Alternative: Ele.me (饿了么) is another popular food delivery app, integrated with Alipay.
◆ Pre-Departure Setup Timeline
2–4 weeks before: Download WeChat → Get verified by existing user → Set up WeChat Pay
1 week before: Download Alipay → Link US credit card → Verify passport → Download VPN → Download Amap → Download Google Translate offline pack → Download Pleco → Buy eSIM (Airalo/Holafly)
Day before flight: Activate eSIM → Test VPN connection → Screenshot hotel addresses in Chinese → Ensure phone storage has 2GB+ free space
On the plane: Turn on eSIM → Connect VPN → Open Alipay to confirm it loads → You're ready

Frequently Asked
App Questions
Do I need a Chinese phone number for Alipay?+
No. As of 2026, Alipay supports international phone numbers and foreign credit cards. Register with your US number, verify with passport, link your card. Ensure your US SIM can receive international SMS for the verification code.
Does Google Maps work in China?+
No. GPS coordinates are intentionally shifted, data is outdated, and transit info is missing. Use Amap (Gaode Maps) or Baidu Maps — both have English interfaces and are extremely accurate.
Can I use WhatsApp in China?+
Only with a VPN or international eSIM that routes traffic outside China. WhatsApp is blocked by the Great Firewall. Use WeChat for messaging within China — it's the local standard.
What if Alipay doesn't accept my card?+
Try a different card — success varies by bank. Visa and Mastercard generally work best. If issues persist, try WeChat Pay as backup. Also try Alipay's Tour Pass — a prepaid virtual wallet you can load with your foreign card for up to 90 days.
Is VPN use legal in China?+
VPN use is technically restricted, but foreigners using paid VPNs discreetly for personal use are rarely targeted. Use a reputable paid VPN (not free ones), don't use it for anything illegal, and you'll be fine. Millions of foreigners in China use VPNs daily.
How many apps do I really need?+
At minimum: 5 apps — Alipay, WeChat, VPN, Amap, and DiDi (or use DiDi's mini-program inside Alipay). Add Google Translate and Trip.com for a much smoother experience. The "nice-to-have" apps (Dianping, Meituan, Pleco) are bonus for longer stays.
Can I use my US phone plan in China?+
Most US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) offer roaming in China, but at $10+/day typical rates. For trips longer than a few days, an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) or local SIM is far cheaper and gives you a working connection to set up your apps.
Should I download these apps before or after arriving in China?+
Before you board. Once inside China's firewall, you can't access the Play Store, foreign App Store accounts, or most VPN provider websites. Set up your VPN and download everything while you still have normal internet access.
What's the best translation app for China?+
Google Translate with the offline Chinese pack downloaded handles menus, signs, and conversations via camera/voice. Pleco is better for reading characters. Both work without a VPN since they have offline modes.
Is Apple Pay accepted in China?+
Only at some international hotels and airport stores. Local shops, restaurants, and street vendors almost exclusively use Alipay or WeChat Pay QR codes. Don't rely on Apple Pay as your main payment method.
